Catamarans

What is a BVI Catamaran Charter?

A BVI catamaran charter is the perfect way to explore the British Virgin Islands, with short cruising times of no more than two hours between hotspots. You can do the full loop of the BVI in a one-week charter.

Catamarans offer stability, spaciousness, and a shallow draft, allowing you to anchor close to beaches and reefs. In White Bay on Jost Van Dyke you will see catamarans anchored so close to the beach you can literally jump right off and swim to the beach bar (hence the name Soggy Dollar Bar).

Catamaran Charters in the BVI operate on an all-inclusive basis (unlike most motor yachts). They include your professional crew, gourmet meals, local cocktails, free use of water toys, and even options for SCUBA diving.

Guests favorite activities include snorkeling at the Pirate Caves, diving on the famous RMS Rhone shipwreck, hiking The Baths on Virgin Gorda, partying onboard the Willy T, and sipping Painkillers at Jost Van Dyke’s iconic beach bars. It is the full Caribbean experience!

Where to Go on Your BVI Catamaran Charter?

Starting from Nanny Cay Marina on Tortola, we recommend a route that goes counter-clockwise around the British Virgin Islands, first hitting the small southern islands: Norman Island, Peter Island, and Cooper Island. Here, you will discover some of BVI’s best dive sites like the Indians and the famous RMS Rhone Shipwreck.

Next, you will head to Virgin Gorda Bath’s National Park and maybe swing by Trellis Bay, where they have the monthly full-moon parties and the legendary Trellis Bay New Year Celebration with Aragorn’s fireballs and Mocko Jumbies.

Depending on the weather and your time schedule, we suggest you include Anegada Island. The reasons to go to Anegada are the Anegada Barrier Reef, the salt ponds –home to the flamingos– and the fantastic seafood restaurants like the Lobster Trap.

When on the way back, return via the Nort side of Tortola, hitting Cane Garden Bay and finishing on Jost Van Dyke, one of our personal favorites. Here, you can wind down at legendary beach bars like Soggy Dollar and Foxy’s while enjoying a Painkiller Cocktail with your toes in the sand.

On your last day, you will come back through Sopers Hole to Nanny Cay, where you started.

How to Get to Your BVI Catamaran Charter?

We recommend you start your BVI catamaran charter in Nanny Cay Marina on Tortola. This is the largest and most populated island in the British Virgin Islands. There are two ways to get there:

The most direct way is to fly to the Terrence B. Lettsome Airport (EIS) on Beef Island, which is connected to Tortola. – This lands you only 30 minutes from the Marina by car. Or you can come via St Thomas. See below.

Nanny Cay Marina on Tortola – Most crewed charters in the BVI will start here.

Flying Into the US Virgin Islands

There are better flight connections to Cyril E. King Airport, St Thomas (STT) in the USVI, and most of our clients choose to come this way despite the slightly longer journey.

From St Thomas, you have 3 options:

  • Start Your Catamaran Charter in the USVI: Find a BVI Charter Catamaran that offers pickups in St Thomas (Yacht Haven Grande Marina). Be aware that not all catamarans have the permits required to charter in USVI territory – We will make sure to find one that does!
  • Private Water Taxi Transfer: Alternatively, we can easily organize a transfer by water taxi from St Thomas to your charter in the BVI. It takes about 30-40 minutes, including customs clearance on arrival, and costs around $150-200 per person.
  • Take the Local Ferry: The last option is to do the transfer independently by ferry.

Ready to Start Your BVI Catamaran Charter Vacation?

Tell us what you want, and have one of our Brokers send you a list of Catamarans selected specifically for you!

What is Included in an All-Inclusive BVI Catamaran Charter?

All-inclusive catamaran charters are standard in the British Virgin Islands (unlike the Mediterranean, where plus-expense charters are more common.) All-inclusive means a set price that covers all expenses related to the charter: yacht, crew, food, beverages, fuel for a set hours of cruising, and activities.

Who is it for? We recommend this option for clients who want a hassle-free experience where they can enjoy their vacation without worrying about additional costs or budgeting for unexpected expenses.

Nevertheless, the issues are the same as in an all-inclusive luxury resort – you can’t have a hot tub full of Moet…

What is it Like Onboard a BVI Luxury Charter Catamaran?

BVI charter catamarans focus on space and comfort, they basically need to resemble a private floating luxury hotel. The main saloon typically has a galley (kitchen), dining space, and often a bar and TV. From here, you’ll access 4-5 private cabins in the hulls, each with its own ensuite bathroom.

Outside, the aft deck features an al-fresco dining area, while the foredeck often has trampolines or a lounge for relaxing. Most luxury catamarans also have a flybridge, this is usually the guests’ favorite spot. Here you will have seating and space for sunbathing, and maybe even a bar and a jacuzzi. Most new charter catamarans have hydraulic swim platforms for easy water access and lounging right at the water’s edge.

Check Out Our Walk-Through Videos

We attend the annual USVI and BVI Yacht Shows to step onboard each Catamaran and meet the crew. –And to make these awesome walk-through videos to send to our clients. Seeing the yachts in person helps us assess which are best suited for different clients and, of course, identify our favorite catamarans. It’s a crucial part of ensuring the perfect yacht, crew, and client match.

What Do You Eat on a BVI Catamaran Charter?

On a BVI catamaran charter, dining is a blend of gourmet cuisine and island-inspired flavors.

Breakfast often includes fresh pastries, tropical fruits, and cooked-to-order options like omelets.

Lunch features light, refreshing meals such as grilled fish tacos, salads, and ceviche, served al fresco.

Afternoon snacks may include charcuterie boards, chips with guacamole, or coconut shrimp.

Dinners are a highlight, with gourmet dishes like grilled lobster, jerk chicken, or filet mignon, paired with fine wines or cocktails.

Desserts range from key lime pie to chocolate lava cake. Drinks include iconic BVI cocktails like Painkillers, local beers, and fresh juices.

Special Dietary Requests

Most charters cater to dietary restrictions like gluten-free, vegetarian, or vegan diets. Some even specialize, which might be worth considering if you have an all-vegan or all-gluten-free group, ex. Mention this in advance!

When is the Best Time for a BVI Catamaran Charter?

The main charter season in the British Virgin Islands spans from December to March, with a peak around Christmas/New Year.

It gets especially around the holidays, so make sure to book your BVI yacht charter well in advance. Ideally, you would inquire about your coming charter 12 months in advance.

WHY? The best charter yachts are often fully booked long in advance, and it’s not unusual to see popular dates booked 2 summers ahead for a BVI yacht charter. Inquiring less than 6 months ahead often means that your first choice is unavailable for charter.

What to Pack for Your BVI Catamaran Charter?

We recommend packing in a soft-sided suitcase or duffel bag, as they are easier to stow onboard after unpacking. Charter catamarans in the BVI usually provide basic toiletries, sunscreen, and beach towels, so focus on versatile clothing and personal essentials. Pack lightly—casual wear, one nice outfit, flip-flops, swimsuits, sunglasses, and a hat should suffice.

Our yacht broker, Louis Lamprell, was available, knowledgeable, friendly, and professional throughout the process. He helped me identify the correct size of catamaran for our cruise, as well as helping me—as a first time yach charterer—understand all the ins and outs of the process, what would be needed, what to expect, etc. The entire experience exceeded our expectations.

William was excellent at assisting at the last minute to locate the charter. He was super responsive and professional. The Oceana was the perfect fit for our family, not only the right size. Captain Umbi took us to amazing locations and hikes and did everything to make sure we were well taken care of. Lindsey worked tirelessly cooking so many delicious dishes, accommodating everyone’s diets, from vegans, to gluten-free. Everything was perfect.

What Do Our Clients Say?

We are proud of our long track record of happy clients, many of whom return for their second or third yacht charter with us. Our clients consistently praise the ease of our booking process, our ability to find the perfect yacht and crew match, and our responsiveness in understanding their needs and making things happen. We are here to set you up with your dream BVI yacht charter.
