Salt Island

Salt Island Yacht Charter Guide

Salt Island is the BVI island we think about when the charter has a real diving or history angle. The RMS Rhone is the headline, and the island works best when the day is planned around the marine park, the conditions, and a sensible overnight nearby.

  • RMS Rhone Marine Park
  • Wreck diving and advanced snorkeling
  • Salt Island Settlement anchorage
  • Cooper, Peter, and Norman Island route flow

What to See and Do on Salt Island

Salt Island should not be treated like a beach-bar stop. It is quieter, more serious, and more rewarding when the group understands why they are going: the RMS Rhone, the marine park, the wreck history, and the underwater life around it.

RMS Rhone Marine Park

RMS Rhone National Park Shipwreck Dive, British Virgin Islands

The RMS Rhone is one of the most important dive sites in the BVI. The wreck lies off Salt Island and is protected within a marine park, so this is not a place to improvise anchoring or treat the seabed casually. In our planning, the Rhone is the reason to come, and the yacht day should be organized around safe access, mooring availability, diver ability, and sea conditions.

Diving the Wreck

For certified divers, Salt Island can be one of the strongest activity days of the whole charter. We would usually coordinate the dive plan early, especially if the yacht does not carry full dive support. The wreck has depth, history, and structure, which is why it keeps coming up in BVI dive conversations. It is also why we do not oversell it to every group: the best version depends on certification level, comfort in the water, and the right weather window.

Snorkeling and Non-Diver Fit

Wreck Alley Dive Site near Salt Island and Cooper Island, British Virgin Islands

Non-divers can still enjoy the Salt Island area, but the fit is more specific. Some groups are happy with snorkeling, a history talk, and a nearby lunch or swim stop. Others would rather spend the same day at Cooper Island or Norman Island. We would choose Salt for guests who are curious about the wreck, not just because it is another island name to add.

Salt Island Settlement and Shore Notes

The coral-encrusted mast of the Rhone sunk in the British Virgin Islands.

Salt Island itself is quiet and lightly developed compared with the main charter stops. The Salt Island Settlement area can be part of the captain’s anchoring conversation when Rhone moorings are not the right fit or not available. The key point is restraint: this is a place where the route should respect the marine park and the island’s quieter character.

Pairing Salt with Cooper, Peter, and Norman

The Rhone, BVI

Salt sits in a very useful charter pocket. Cooper Island can carry the softer overnight after a dive day, Peter Island gives another nearby anchorage option, and Norman Island can bring the route back toward caves, snorkeling, and a livelier BVI rhythm. We like this because it lets the group have one strong dive/history day without making the whole week feel too technical.

Anchorages and Yacht Notes

The Rhone, BVI

The anchoring conversation around Salt Island matters more than usual. The Rhone area is protected, and anchoring is restricted in the marine park. Your captain will use proper moorings where available and choose nearby anchorages such as Salt Island Settlement, Cooper, or Peter when that is the better plan. We would never make Salt a rigid promise for a specific hour of the week; it should stay tied to weather, visibility, mooring availability, and the group’s dive plan.

A Short History of Salt Island

Salt Island is inseparable from the RMS Rhone, a Royal Mail Steamer wrecked in the 1867 hurricane. That story gives the island a different gravity from the BVI’s party beaches and resort stops. The wreck is now part of a protected marine park and has become one of the best-known underwater sites in the territory. For us, that is the reason Salt deserves a proper page: it is not just another dot in the channel, it is one of the places where BVI sailing, weather, history, and diving all meet.

BVI Itineraries That Include Salt Island

Salt Island works best when it has a clear job in the route. We would not add it just to collect another island name. Start with our 7-day BVI catamaran itinerary, then decide whether this stop improves the week for your group: easier logistics, better diving, quieter snorkeling, or a smoother east-end flow.

FAQs

Is Salt Island worth visiting on a BVI yacht charter?

Yes, if your group cares about diving, snorkeling, or BVI history. If the group mainly wants beach bars and easy swimming, Cooper, Norman, or Jost may be a better use of the day.

Can you dive the RMS Rhone from a charter yacht?

Yes, but the plan should be coordinated with the captain and, when needed, a qualified dive operator. The area is protected and anchoring rules matter.

Is the RMS Rhone suitable for snorkelers?

Some parts of the area may interest strong snorkelers in good conditions, but the best experience is usually for divers. We would not build the whole day around it for nervous swimmers.

Where should a yacht overnight near Salt Island?

Cooper Island, Peter Island, and selected Salt Island options can all make sense depending on weather, moorings, and the route.

What itinerary includes Salt Island?

Salt fits well into a Cooper-Peter-Norman route, or as a dive-focused stop inside a 7-day BVI itinerary.
