No visa, yes passport. The British Virgin Islands are a British Overseas Territory, so US citizens (and Canadians, Brits, and EU nationals) enter visa-free for stays this length, but everyone needs a valid passport, children included, even when arriving by ferry from St Thomas.
Arriving via St Thomas? You will pass US customs on the way in and BVI immigration at the ferry terminal, both routine. Your captain handles the boat’s clearances; you mostly notice a form and a short stop.
